I recently spent the better part of a couple months writing a new product for one of my better clients that discussed in great depth the topic of niche selection. Lots of time spent researching competitors, checking top selling products, developing a database of potential product ideas, and on and on.

That’s all fine and good for someone developing their own product – you want to be sure you have a good product idea in the bank before investing all that time and money – but what about the affiliate marketers and newcomers who just want to test the waters and see what works? Do they really need to spend all that time digging up details about various niches?

I can’t speak for everyone and I’ll be honest, I’m not an affiliate marketing guru, but what I am good at is developing content – about pretty much anything. So, I got to thinking; why invest time, money and your hopes and dreams into one or two narrow fields when you can test your way into a new business. That’s where PLR comes in.

With a good PLR package, you can do a tremendous amount of market research without spending a dime. Take five articles, rewrite them and package them into a short report or eBook and post it as a Kindle freebie. How many downloads does it get in the five day free window that Amazon allows all Kindle products? How many downloads does it get after the free window is up? Does it get any reviews?

I posted a 4,000 word report written for one of my websites on Kindle a few weeks ago and when it was free, I got 45 downloads. Not too bad. I then did the same for another report of mine and it received 454 downloads. That’s 10 times more interest in that topic. If I was an affiliate marketer, which market do you think I would invest my next couple of weeks into?

This isn’t exactly a foolproof method. There are other factors to consider here. Things like cover design, the title of your book and how useful the information actually is. A blog might feature your freebie during the five day period or it could go viral and start getting massive attention within your niche. But, it’s free, it’s fast and it gives you a solid idea of what you’re up against in that niche.

Just remember to rewrite any PLR you use in your Kindle eBook. Amazon comes down hard on PLR repackagers these days and if you order through ArtisanPLR, our terms of service don’t allow repackaging for Kindle. Otherwise, best of luck with your research!
